Greek culture will take center stage in Skiathos this September with a series of evenings combining traditional dance workshops, live performances and Greek music.
The Greek Night program will run from September 8 through September 22 at the Skiathos Garden Theatre, offering visitors an opportunity to experience Greek dance and music while taking part in the festivities themselves. Tickets cost €18.
The evening begins with a Greek dance workshop from 8 to 8:45 p.m., open to everyone. A dance performance follows from 8:45 to 9:30 p.m., before the program turns to live music.
On Tuesdays, the evening continues with live rebetiko music, a traditional Greek urban music style, from 9:30 to 11 p.m. Fridays feature traditional Greek island music played by a DJ during the same time slot.
The program aims to introduce audiences not only to Greek dance as a whole but also to the striking regional differences within the country’s traditions.
A journey through Greece’s regional dances
Greek traditional dances vary considerably from one part of the country to another. Local conditions and landscapes — including whether communities developed on islands or in mountainous areas, as well as differences in climate — have shaped variations in dance steps, rhythm, clothing and atmosphere.
The contrast between island dances and traditions from central and northern Greece is particularly pronounced, organizers say, highlighting the diversity of Greek dance culture.
The workshops will draw on traditions from Skiathos, Crete, central Greece, northern Greece, Rhodes, the Peloponnese and the Cyclades, giving participants the chance to encounter several distinct regional styles in a single program.
The format is designed for both spectators and those who want to join the dancing. Visitors can watch the performances or step onto the dance floor alongside friends, old and new.
With drinks and snacks served in the theater’s garden, the program presents an informal introduction to Greek cultural traditions — and an invitation to experience them rather than simply observe them.
