UK PM says Greek PM meeting cancelled due to broken assurances

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on November 29 assurances were broken by his Greek counterpart over the topic of Parthenon marbles which led to the cancellation of their meeting this week.

Greek government officials said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had only reiterated his country’s longstanding stance. Sunak’s cancellation of the meeting was disrespectful and prevented the two leaders from discussing important global issues, they said.

In parliament, Sunak said it was not appropriate to “grandstand and relitigate issues of the past”.

British opposition leader Keir Starmer responded to Sunak by saying he has a reverse Midas touch.

“Everything he touches turns to… Maybe the home secretary can help me out,” Starmer said, referencing recent reports that interior minister James Cleverly used profanity to describe a northern English town.
