GREECE, N.Y. — Families gathered at Basil Marella Park in Greece on Saturday to celebrate the upcoming school year and get free supplies before the first day of school.
The Back-to-School Bash ran from 1 to 4 p.m. Greater New York Revitalization hosted the event to support families as back-to-school costs are rising. Families are estimated to spend $864 this year on supplies and clothes.
The celebration also offered free haircuts for kids, food, and activities. Jake Bishop, director of the Dezio and Gingello Foundation, spoke about the impact of the event.
“Being able to get a cut before school gives you a boost of confidence. It’s also one less expense parents have to worry about. It’s expensive, we understand — but having a volunteer for the cuts and face painting. Everybody wants a fresh fade,” Bishop said.
Organizers said last year’s event drew more than 390 attendees, and they projected a higher turnout this year.
