Popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has died at the age of 54 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Mazonakis was rushed to Elpis General Hospital in Athens on Wednesday after a private doctor in the Kolonaki district determined the seriousness of his condition.
According to the hospital, he arrived by ambulance without a pulse or spontaneous breathing. Medical staff attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation but were unable to revive him, and he was officially pronounced dead at 5.40 pm.
His sudden death has prompted an outpouring of grief across Greece’s entertainment industry and among his hundreds of thousands of fans. Mazonakis was regarded as one of the most recognisable and influential Greek popular singers of his generation.
A career spanning more than three decades
Born on 4 March 1972, Mazonakis grew up in Nikaia, in the greater Athens area. He showed an aptitude for laïko music from an early age, influenced by the sounds of his neighbourhood and some of Greece’s great popular singers.
He began performing professionally while still young, appearing at nightclubs in Athens and elsewhere around Greece. His distinctive voice and commanding stage presence quickly set him apart.
Mazonakis launched his recording career in the early 1990s, releasing his debut solo album, Me ta matia na to les, in 1993.
A string of commercially successful releases followed, including Mou leipeis (1994), M’ emena vres me (1996) and Allaxane ta plana mou (1997), establishing him as one of the leading names in contemporary Greek music.
Over the following decades, he continued to enjoy widespread success and worked with prominent composers and songwriters, including Phoebus, Giorgos Sabanis and Michalis Hatzigiannis.
Among the songs associated with his career were Gucci Forema, To Finito, Savvato, Echo Klapsei and Ena Keno.
Mazonakis also became known for his bold, eccentric and sometimes provocative fashion choices, as well as the elaborate staging of his performances. His work frequently combined elements of performance art and modern pop and rock with traditional laïko music.
That willingness to experiment extended beyond the concert stage. In 2021, he took part in the YOU and AI exhibition organised by the Onassis Foundation’s cultural centre, lending his voice and excerpts from a personal confession to the work Exodos at Pedion tou Areos in Athens.
Alongside his live performances at major nightclubs and concert venues, Mazonakis appeared as a judge on popular television music talent programs, including The X Factor. His spontaneity, humour and support for emerging performers further endeared him to audiences.
Hospital confirms death
Elpis General Hospital issued an official statement following his death.
“On 9 September 2026, at 4.45 pm, Georgios Mazonakis, born in 1972, was brought to the hospital by an EKAB ambulance without spontaneous breathing and without a pulse,” the hospital said.
“Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed in accordance with protocol, without a successful outcome. The official time of death was 5.40 pm.
“The hospital administration and staff express their sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”
What happened before the cardiac arrest
According to information available so far, Mazonakis had attended a clinic at 11 Karneadou Street for an initial appointment ahead of planned treatment, reportedly organised around the singer’s numerous upcoming professional commitments.
After an intravenous catheter was inserted, he reportedly experienced severe chest pain and suffered a cardiac arrest.
Staff at the clinic called Greece’s National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) at 4.21 pm, reporting that the singer had suffered a cardiac episode.
Seven minutes later, at 4.28 pm, an EKAB motorcycle paramedic arrived and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards and transported Mazonakis to Elpis, the nearest hospital on emergency duty, where he arrived at 4.45 pm.
Medical personnel in the emergency department continued attempts to resuscitate him, but his condition proved irreversible.
Giorgos Mazonakis was officially pronounced dead at 5.40 pm on 9 September 2026.
