Hamilton’s story with the Murph starts more than a decade ago when Christopher Nolan wanted a watch that would play a pivotal part in his 2014 blockbuster, Interstellar.
The movie watch, inspired by their iconic Khaki Field model, was created as a one-off for Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain to wear during filming, but fans became obsessed with the watch and Hamilton eventually created a near replica for retail in 2019.
Fast forward seven years and the Murph is getting a little upgrade with a space-inspired blue dial. After experimenting with a white dial version in 2024, the new blue version seems to fit the aesthetic and purpose of the watch better.
Other than the dial colour, this is pretty much the Khaki Field Murph that fans have been enjoying. The 38mm size is smaller than the 42mm of the initial launch but then watches have been trending smaller, while the bracelet is available in both stainless steel and crocodile print leather.
Still a tool watch at heart with a strong aviation aesthetic, it is hitting retail at the more than reasonable £865 for the leather strap with the stainless steel bracelet pushing the price up to the still excellent £935.
Christopher Nolan’s relationship with Hamilton is still going strong with the director pairing with the Swiss brand for a watch inspired by his latest film, The Odyssey.
Co-designed by Nolan, the watch is informed by motifs, themes and images directly from the film and story, most notably in the helmet and sword used by The Odyssey‘s hero, Odysseyus, played by Matt Damon.
The influence is most notable on the dial and caseback with the black dial drawn from the helmet’s texture and the 12 o’clock index featuring a rivet from the sword’s scabbard. The hands of the watch are also sword shaped, while the caseback depicts the helmet worn by Odysseus and also features Nolan’s personal signature.
Hamilton and Nolan used the Khaki Field Automatic as a template for the piece, which comes in at a sizeable 42mm.
The watch has also been adorned in bronze, a clear nod to the material used to forge weapons at the time, while the strap is made out of leather.
Buyers of the watch also receive a replica of Athena’s pin, which in the story is gifted to Odysseus by his wife, Penelope. The pin is not just an accessory but can be worn as a broach while the box also comes with a commemorative plaque.
Just 2112 pieces are being put into production, another reference to Greek mythology. 12 is a significant number in the Greek myths, in particular The Odyssey, which features exactly 12,000 lines. The Hamilton x The Odyssey is retailing for £1,190 and was released in July alongside the hit movie.
