Greece and Cyprus will jointly submit a program under the EU’s SAFE (Security Action for Europe) framework for the co-production of an Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV), Kathimerini understands.
The development coincides with an announcement by the Hania-based company ALTUS-LSA that it successfully completed live-fire trials of its UCAV, code-named Kerveros, at the Crete shooting range. The trials were conducted in cooperation with missile manufacturer MBDA. The UCAV fired MBDA’s fifth-generation Akeron MP anti-tank missile. Kerveros is the commercial name of ALTUS’ heavy-lift ATLAS 8 octocopter equipped with the Akeron MP.
According to the company, the tests verified the full functionality of the platform, flight system, electro-optical sensors, fire-control system and weapon payload under field conditions. The drone was also tested during the “Aisios Oionos ’25” exercise, where Greece’s armed forces and the Hellenic Center for Defense Innovation evaluated unmanned systems. It also participated in the “Doureios Ippos ’26” exercise.
The developments are presented as early indications that initiatives to strengthen Greece’s domestic defense innovation ecosystem are beginning to produce results.
The EU’s SAFE program provides long-term financing to members, plus Ukraine and European Economic Association members Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, to boost investments in their defense industries.
