A Thai island has been crowned the ‘best’ in the world on a recent ranking, beating out tourism heavy hitters in places like Greece, the Maldives, and Australia.
Koh Samui took out the top spot on the list – but is it actually that good?

Travel + Leisure has released its annual World’s Best Awards, in which destinations, hotels, and activities across the globe are scored and ranked.
Koh Samui came in at number one on the list of Best Islands, scoring 95.64 out of 100.
Voters praised the island’s diversity – not only does it have beautiful beaches, but also lush jungle, great food, a distinct culture, luxe places to stay, and friendly locals.
It’s also considered one of the world’s best wellness destinations, and played host to the cast of The White Lotus for the hit TV show’s third season.
I’ve been to Samui three times (once solo on a group tour, once with my partner, and once with our baby), and can confidently agree that yep, it has earned its spot as the world’s top island.
While some island destinations have their travel niches (party islands, luxury islands, deserted islands, wellness islands), Samui manages to capture it all in one place.

One day you can take a snorkelling tour out to secluded beaches, then a few hours later be dining on world-class food. The next day you can hike out to waterfalls, visit temples, then spend the evening partying on the beach.
Backpackers and young tourists love the budget-friendly offerings, families can take advantage of the mid-priced beachfront resorts, and those with a little more cash to splash can relax at the island’s hidden high-end accommodation.
Plus, it’s perfectly located for Aussies; accessible via plane via Bangkok or Singapore.

Second place on T+L’s list is the Maldives, which probably needs no explanation. With its overwater bungalows, white beaches, and bright blue water, it’s cemented itself as a top honeymoon spot for a reason.
The Galapagos came in third place, a volcanic archipelago off the coast of Ecuador, which is known for its unique and fearless wildlife. Thanks to strict visitor caps, the region is largely untouched and on the bucket list of many nature lovers.
Next up, two Aussie holiday faves: Bali came in fourth place, followed by Phuket in fifth.
No Australian islands made the top 20, and the first European inclusion doesn’t come until Sardinia, in 12th place.
