ATHENS. Renowned Greek singer Dimitris Kokotas died Tuesday at the age of 57 after spending nearly two years hospitalized at Georgios Gennimatas Hospital in Athens following a heart attack and cardiac arrest he suffered during a television shoot for the Greek music competition show J2US in March 2024. Despite his long and courageous battle to survive, he ultimately passed away.
The son of acclaimed singer Stamatis Kokotas, Dimitris followed his father into music and made a strong mark on the Greek recording industry, particularly during the 1990s.
Throughout his career, he released several solo albums, worked with prominent composers, lyricists and singers, and performed extensively at nightclubs and music venues.
Among the artists he collaborated with were Marinella, Kaiti Garmpi, Angela Dimitriou, Antypas, Vasilis Karras, Konstantina, Litsa Giagkousi and his father, Stamatis Kokotas.
His first solo album, Diadoseis (Rumors), was released on February 10, 1994, by Eros Music, featuring music and lyrics by Phoivos. It sold 30,000 copies in Greece and Cyprus and was certified gold.
Kokotas went on to make two more albums with Phoivos, Syneidisi (Conscience) and Acharistia (Ingratitude), which produced some of his biggest hits of the era, including Anemona, Giati Me Tyrannas and Ki Afise Na Lene, among others.
On his next two albums, released in 1998 and 1999, respectively, Kokotas performed songs by two other prominent Greek composers, Nikos Karvelas and Giorgos Theofanous.
With the arrival of the new millennium, his musical presence became less frequent as he turned his attention to business ventures. In his final years, however, he had hoped to make a strong return to music, which remained his great passion.
Dimitris Kokotas was married and had a 15-year-old daughter.
