ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – A highly anticipated Greek food and culture event opened to lines of eager customers today.
From its origins as a small gathering of families at the Holy Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church, the Original Rochester Greek Fest expanded over the past few decades into a popular annual event.
Since 1963, the festival has been sharing authentic Greek food and culture with southeastern Minnesota. Among classic dishes on offer like gyros and souvlaki, there is also a variety of dessert options and a bar stocked with Greek beverages.
For visitors who are unable to wait in line, Greek Fest has a drive-thru menu and service.
All of Greek Fest’s organizers and cooks are volunteers. often from the Holy Anargyroi Church parish.
Ari Kolas, the lead organizer of the Greek Fest committee, called it his “favorite weekend of the year.”
“It’s amazing how much closer you get to people when you’re sweating and working together,” Ari said. “That’s how you really create that family atmosphere and the fun that it is.”
Alongside the cuisine, Greek Fest also showcases a traditional Greek dance and live music performance. There’s also a prize for the winner of the famous pita toss event.
The Rochester Greek Festival is open on Saturday, August 29, from 11 am to 8 pm and on Sunday, August 30, from 11 am to 4 pm. The festival takes place outside the Holy Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church. Admission is free.
