Royal fashion tends to be more sentimental than most. Pieces are chosen for their sentimentality and heirloom credentials along with how they appear. Think Catherine, the Princess of Wales wearing Queen Mary’s tiara or the Duchess of Sussex wearing Diana, Princess of Wales’ watch. This week, it’s Princess Eugenie who has chosen familial fashion for a landmark moment.
On August 4, Princess Eugenie took to Instagram to share that she had been delivered of a baby girl on August 3 in Lisbon, Portugal, where the family spends much of the year. She captioned the post: ‘Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are beyond in love with our girlie.’ The new arrival joins their sons August, born 2021, and Ernest, born 2023.
Beyond the sweet familial happiness, another sentimental detail is worth noting. The newborn is photographed wearing a baby pink wing-adorned sleepsuit by Marie Chantal. Known for its premium childrenswear, the brand has long-winding connections with the British royal family as its founder, Marie-Chantal, is related by marriage.
In 1995, Marie-Chantal married Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, the would-be heir apparent to the Greek throne. Queen Elizabeth even threw a tea party to celebrate the London nuptials. The Greek and British royals have many familial connections through both the late Queen and her late husband, Prince Philip, himself a member of Greek royalty.
Pavlos’ father, the late King Constantine II of Greece, was a first cousin once removed of Prince Philip, and, like most European royals, both families are descended from Queen Victoria. Both of Pavlos’ grandmothers were her great-grandaughters, while Queen Elizabeth was her great-great-granddaughter and so on and so forth.
Furthermore, the families aren’t just long-distant relatives. In more recent history, the families have kept close ties by choosing each other for their children’s godparents. King Charles III is godfather to both Pavlos, and Marie-Chantal and Pavlos’ eldest daughter Olympia, and Prince William is godfather to their son Constantine. Both Marie-Chantal and Pavlos were present for Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s wedding in 2018.
Princess Eugenie’s choice to dress her daughter in Marie Chantal only extends the ties between the two families and was done with the sweetest of executions.
