Fashion trends have a tendency to be cyclical, returning to the forefront even after years spent hidden in the woodwork. From the ’70s corduroy trouser trend that took over last year, to draped detailing inspired by Ancient Greek clothing, (which has become popular thanks to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey) fashion is constantly looking to the past for future inspiration.
Now, it’s the ’50s that have returned to the style conversation, with circle skirts starting to take over. But this isn’t the first time I’ve noticed the trend: M&S released a citrus-yellow midi skirt with subtle pleat detailing back in June this year. Now, the high street retailer has brought the circle silhouette back, except this time, it’s given animal print the retro treatment.
The Box Pleat Midi Circle Skirt takes animal print and gives it a slightly retro feel thanks to its circle shape, a style defined by an A-line silhouette and midi length, once championed by the likes of Christian Dior. At first glance, this version it’s hard to decipher what motif it is, but look closely and you’ll notice it’s zebra print, another pattern that’s beginning to rival leopard, much like deer print, for example.
