The smell of roasted lamb filled the air as traditional Greek music and the sounds of dancing carried through the grounds of the Greek Community of Victoria in Saanich.

GreekFest returned Aug. 29-30 for a weekend celebration of Greek food, music and culture, with the festival set to continue through the first weekend of September.

The few hundred attendees who took part in the first weekend had the chance to experience Greek traditions through food, dance and live entertainment.

For many, Greek delicacies were the main draw, with volunteers preparing a wide variety of homemade traditional dishes, including roasted lamb, souvlaki, gyros, spanakopita, loukoumades and baklava.

Families and other attendees enjoyed their meals while listening to music and watching live performances.

Greek dancing was another central part of the festival, with more than 20 dance and music groups scheduled to perform throughout the event. Some performers are travelling from as far away as Greece.

Dancers perform in traditional costumes to Greek music, showcasing dances including the energetic Pentozalis and Syrtaki.

Organizers describe the event as an opportunity to celebrate Greek heritage while welcoming people from across Greater Victoria and sharing the community’s traditions with a wider audience.

GreekFest continues through the first weekend of September at the Greek Community of Victoria.
