Popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has died at the age of 54 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Athens.
Mazonakis was taken to Elpis Hospital on Wednesday after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest while at a private internal medicine clinic in Kolonaki.
According to Greek media reports, emergency services were called to the clinic and an EKAB paramedic began CPR at the scene. He was subsequently transported by ambulance to Elpis Hospital, where medical staff continued resuscitation efforts but were unable to revive him.
His death was confirmed shortly afterwards.
Born in Nikaia in March 1972 and of Cretan descent, Mazonakis grew up in the wider Piraeus area and began his professional music career in the early 1990s.
He first performed professionally at a nightclub in Patra before attracting the attention of PolyGram, now Universal Music, which signed him and released his debut album in 1993.
Mazonakis went on to become one of Greece’s most recognisable and successful popular singers, known for his distinctive voice, unconventional style and commanding stage presence.
Among the songs that became synonymous with his career was “To Gucci Forema” (The Gucci Dress), one of the biggest and most recognisable hits of modern Greek popular music. His extensive catalogue also included enduring favourites such as “Savvato,” “Nikotini,” “Ego Agapao Anarhika” and “To Kalytero Paidi.”
His music blended elements of traditional Greek laïko with contemporary pop, helping establish a distinctive sound and image that kept him at the forefront of Greek entertainment for more than three decades.
Throughout his career, Mazonakis performed extensively across Greece and Cyprus and developed a significant following among Greek communities abroad.
He shared a longstanding connection with Australia’s Greek community, having toured the country and performed for audiences in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.
More recently, that Australian connection came full circle on The Voice of Greece, when Melbourne-born Greek Australian singer Apostolis Kasparidis chose to join Mazonakis’ team after receiving a four-chair turn during his 2025 audition.
His international career also included performances for Greek diaspora communities in Germany and the United States, including New York, New Jersey, Atlantic City and Chicago.
Mazonakis cited some of Greece’s most celebrated performers, including Stratos Dionysiou, Giannis Parios, Marinella and Haris Alexiou, among his musical influences.
His death at just 54 brings an abrupt end to a career spanning more than three decades and leaves behind a significant legacy in contemporary Greek music.
