Dortmund fear serious injury for new signing Konstantelias

Borussia Dortmund fear midfielder Giannis Konstantelias could have suffered a serious knee injury in the 2-0 Bundesliga opener against SV Hamburg on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Greek shone on his league debut, scoring the second goal just before the break. But he went down clutching his knee in the second half after overextending himself and had to hobble off.

“It makes me very sad what happened to Konstantelias. We have to wait for the diagnosis tomorrow, but it doesn’t sound too good given what the doctor has told me,” Dortmund coach Niko Kovač told Sky.

The former PAOK player combined well with fellow new Greek signing Konstantinos Karetsas and Dortmund’s other scorer on the day, Serhou Guirassy, in a vibrant first-half display.

Last season’s Bundesliga runners-up could now be shorn of Konstantelias after just one league game and the easy win was also clouded by substitute Samuele Inácio being sent off after just over 2 minutes on the pitch after a studs-up lunge.

Television cameras then showed the Italian hurl a water bottle at the Dortmund logo in the tunnel.

“That’s a bad look,” Sky pundit Lothar Matthäus remarked.
