During the 2025–2026 school year, the pilot programme “Cyprus in My Classroom” was implemented at the Apostolos Varnavas School in London, focusing on traditional music as part of the unit “Discovering the Music and Songs of Cyprus.”
As an important element of Cyprus’s intangible cultural heritage, traditional music was introduced to the students through experiential workshops, which included learning traditional songs and rhythms, as well as becoming familiar with traditional musical instruments.
Through a series of experiential music education activities by the musician Anna Aristeidou, students were introduced to Cypriot traditional music, traditional songs, rhythms, musical instruments, and local customs and traditions. At the same time, they were encouraged to participate actively, collaborate with one another, express themselves creatively, and develop a stronger connection with their cultural heritage.
This initiative forms part of the longstanding mission of the Service for Overseas and Repatriated Cypriots to preserve and strengthen the national and cultural identity of children in the diaspora. The Greek language, history, traditions, customs, and cultural heritage constitute a valuable legacy passed down from previous generations and a cornerstone of our collective memory. Transmitting this heritage to younger generations is a key priority, ensuring that it remains alive, relevant, and creative, regardless of where they live.
The results of the initiative have been particularly positive, as the activity constitutes a comprehensive educational intervention that combines music, tradition, and contemporary pedagogical approaches. It enables students not only to acquire knowledge but also to experience and engage with their culture and cultural identity.
Through initiatives such as this, the Service seeks to strengthen the connection of young people in the diaspora with their Greek and Cypriot roots, fostering a love for their language, culture, and history, while contributing to the preservation of our cultural continuity and national identity for future generations.
