The Cretan Association of Sydney & NSW celebrated Father’s Day with a wonderful Taverna Night at St Euphemia Church Hall on Saturday night, bringing together more than 190 members, families and friends for an evening of Cretan food, music, dancing and community spirit.
The evening was particularly special for the many families who came together across generations to celebrate the fathers, grandfathers and father figures within the community.
The Association’s youth dancers proudly took to the floor throughout the night, performing a selection of traditional Cretan dances, including Pentozali, Laziotis, Syrto and Maleviziotis, under the guidance of their dance teachers, Irene Vitetzakis and Christopher Townsend.
Following their performance, the dancers invited their fathers to join them on the dance floor, where each presented their father with a small Father’s Day gift as a token of love and appreciation. It was a touching moment, with fathers and their children coming together for a commemorative photograph.
Live music was provided by the talented young Cretan musicians of Kritika Sydney — George Siganakis, Dylan Giannoulis, Alexander Mountakis and Prodromos Moysiadis — who kept the hall alive throughout the evening with traditional Cretan music and provided the perfect accompaniment to the dancing and celebrations.
In appreciation of their contribution to the evening and their commitment to keeping Cretan music alive in Sydney, the Association presented the musicians with a special gift.
A tremendous amount of work took place behind the scenes to make the evening possible. Many dedicated volunteers spent the day preparing and cooking an array of traditional Cretan dishes, including homemade kalitsounia, mezethes, pilafi, meats and other favourites.
Their generosity, hard work and countless hours in the kitchen helped create the warm and authentic atmosphere of a traditional Cretan gathering.
The evening also provided an opportunity to recognise the Association’s newly elected Executive Committee and Youth Committees. Members of both committees were invited to the stage and formally introduced to those in attendance, before gathering for a commemorative photograph as they begin their service for the new term.
The evening was a fitting celebration of Father’s Day, bringing families and generations together through Cretan food, music and dance.
It was also a wonderful opportunity for younger members of the community to participate in and continue the traditions and cultural heritage that have been passed down through generations.
The Cretan Association of Sydney & NSW sincerely thanked everyone who attended and, in particular, the many volunteers, dancers, dance teachers, musicians and supporters whose contribution made the Father’s Day Taverna Night such an enjoyable and memorable celebration.
