Around 240 Greeks and Germans took part in a festive service at Berlin Cathedral on Saturday 3 October to mark German Unity Day, according to Euronews. The event brought together 38 pupils from the Chios Music School with choirs and ensembles from the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin.
The combined performers presented works by Mendelssohn, Poulenc, Britten, Lewandowski and Holst, along with pieces by Michalis Adamis and Yannis Christou. Kai-Uwe Jirka, artistic director of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, conducted the cathedral concert.
Jirka explained that the ensemble has held a ceremony in the cathedral for the past three years, moving outside afterward so the congregation can sing together on the church steps for Europe. He said the outdoor gathering was conceived as a response to an event organized nearby in the Lustgarten by a far-right party three years earlier, and that the choirs have since reserved the space to celebrate Europe alongside Germany. He described this year’s edition as perfect, with young people from across Europe singing side by side.
The Berlin service followed an earlier collaboration. During the 10th Chios Music Festival last August, more than 50 young choristers from the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin spent a week on Chios and gave concerts at various venues. Friederike Stahmer, who founded the Berlin Sing-Akademie Girls Choir 20 years ago, was on the island and said the exchange is special because participants create music together. She noted that her choir learned Greek songs, mainly from Chios and the wider region, while the Chios pupils learned German songs, and that such collaborations are initially challenging because of differences in musical style and language.
Stahmer added that the Chios Music School’s visit to Berlin allowed the groups to revisit repertoire already performed on Chios and to see it develop, and that making music together has a deeper impact than simply getting to know one another.
The Chios Music Festival and the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin set up the cultural exchange with support from the Greek-German Youth Foundation. The Greek group stayed eight days in the German capital and took part in three concerts in total.
Olga Holdorff Myriagou and Lefteris Veniadis shared the artistic direction of the Chios Music Festival. Myriagou said the festival prioritizes opportunities for young people, noting that the choir traveling to Berlin has more chances than children on Chios, which she described as lying on the edge of Europe. She said the aim is to create comparable opportunities on the island when the Berlin children visit through the program and to give Chios children the chance to travel abroad and discover new things.
Veniadis said the shared language of music produced what he described as a miracle, with German and Chios children sharing the stage and singing German and Greek songs. He said the concerts were staged across the island in landscapes that took on a new dimension through music, and that a similar experience is now unfolding in Berlin.
Four young participants described their experiences. Orfeas Kirythras of the Chios Music School called the exchange extremely valuable because it teaches participants to live alongside people from another culture. Chrysa Noka, also a Chios Music School student, said she initially had doubts but joined because she thought the experience would not come again, and that the groups overcame differences and adapted so everyone felt comfortable.
Louise Castellani of the Berlin Girls Choir said the time on Chios was wonderful and that she made many friends, and that she hopes the collaboration can be repeated next year. Elsa Kriegenburg, also from the Berlin Girls Choir, said music serves as a common language that eases communication and creates a distinct sense of community, and that the young participants became friends quickly.
After the service, the musical encounter continued outside Berlin Cathedral on the steps overlooking the Lustgarten through the Sing for Europe initiative, with the choirs and a large crowd singing together.
