The flavors, music and tradition of Greece filled Island Park Aug. 20-23 as the Panaghia Greek Orthodox Church hosted its annual Greek Festival.
The four-day celebration brought together residents and visitors from across Long Island for authentic Greek food, live music, dancing, rides, games and family entertainment.
This year marked the 45th anniversary of the church community, according to Father George Kazoulis, who said the festival continues to serve as an opportunity for the community to come together.
“It is nice because we gather all together, as a family,” Kazoulis said. “The community comes together and as volunteers, everybody is helping to support the four days.”
Traditional Greek dishes were among the weekend’s biggest draws, with festivalgoers lining up for favorites such as souvlaki and gyros. Guests also enjoyed loukoumades, a traditional Greek pastry, along with other baked goods, while a beer and wine garden provided another gathering spot.
Live Greek music and dancing also helped to create a festive atmosphere throughout the weekend while families enjoyed the rides and games.
For the first time, organizers also dedicated an hour before the festival officially opened to children of all abilities. The children and their families were invited to enjoy the food and rides in a more accommodating environment before the larger crowds arrived.
“Everyone loves the Greek food, they love the music and they love the friendly environment,” Kazoulis said.
The festival’s popularity has also led attendees to ask for more Greek-themed events throughout the year.
“It’s not enough once a year,” Kazoulis said. “It’s the biggest event of the year, but there is so much demand for more.”
The church hosts smaller events throughout the year to continue bringing people together and sharing Greek culture with the community
