The flavours and festive spirit of Lesvos filled Mytilenian House in Canterbury as Sydney’s Greek community gathered for a joyful celebration of Sardella Day on Sunday, September 20.
With sunny weather, live Greek music and plenty of dancing, the annual event offered guests an afternoon overflowing with traditional food, laughter and community spirit.
At the centre of the feast were sardelles, the small fish closely connected to Lesvos’ culinary heritage. The food was prepared traditionally and served by members of the Mytilenian Brotherhood of Sydney & NSW committee and its volunteers, bringing the celebration back to its community-focused roots.
Mytilenian Brotherhood President Dimitri Barmakellis described the gathering as a memorable success.
“The weather was fantastic, the food was amazing, and the atmosphere was simply wonderful. There was more than enough to go around for everyone, an abundance of food, joy, happiness, laughter and music,” Barmakellis told The Greek Herald after the event.
For community members unable to travel to their ancestral island, the celebration brought a little piece of Lesvos to Sydney through its flavours, music and traditions.
The family-friendly gathering also gave younger generations an opportunity to experience their cultural heritage and make new memories alongside parents and grandparents.
Barmakellis thanked everyone who attended and supported the Brotherhood, describing the event as “a truly great celebration, shared with great people and beautiful memories”.
For one afternoon, Mytilenian House became a small corner of Lesvos – complete with generous tables, lively music and the warm hospitality for which the island is known.
