If you’re looking for a weekend where the whole family can eat well, dance a little and soak up some culture, the Portland Greek Festival is ready to deliver with authentic Greek food, traditional dance, music and more. Hanna Makarounis and Anthea Fraser from the Portland Greek Festival joined us to share why it’s an event you won’t want to miss!
After seven decades, the Festival has grown into one of the largest events of its kind, sharing Greek Orthodox faith and rich culture with more than 15,000 guests each year. It’s become an iconic Portland metropolitan tradition and has been designated an Oregon Heritage Tradition by the Oregon Heritage Commission. Each year, a portion of the festival’s proceeds goes to philanthropic efforts across the greater Portland community.
The festival’s roots stretch back to the late 1800s, when the first Greek immigrants arrived in the Northwest for work in fishing, lumber, railroads and other jobs. They established the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in southeast Portland. After moving to a larger church at 32nd and NE Glisan in 1952, the community faced a familiar challenge: paying off the mortgage. That’s when the women of the church stepped in, organizing a bazaar featuring handwork, food, pastries, music and dances from their homeland.
