On this day in history: Corfu 30th March


1872:

Death of Nikolaos Halikiopoulos-Mantzaros, the Corfu composer of the Greek National Anthem. Mantzaros founded the Heptanese (Ionian) School of Music and helped establish Greek virtuoso music. Note: His date of death is also given as April 12 (in the new calendar).

1896: ‘Mantzaros’ Philharmonic Band arrives in Athens to take part in the events for the 1896 Olympic Games.

1917: Two small boats attempt to drag to shore a torpedo which is in the sea just off Pentati. While they are doing this the torpedo hits a rock and explodes. No trace of the nine men and one woman who were on the boats was found.
