LONG ISLAND CITY – Meraki Laographic Arts has announced their first fundraiser of the season, a Tavli Tournament, which will take place later this month.
Set to be held on Saturday, September 26, the 21-and-over event will feature a Tavli Tournament welcoming newcomers and tavli pros to compete from 5 to 7 PM.
Those unfamiliar with tavli (backgammon), are invited to come along an hour earlier (from 4 to 5 PM) and learn how to play in a crash course lesson.
The winner of the tournament will receive a handmade Travel Backgammon Set from the chic, Greek lifestyle store, Hellenic Aesthetic.
The fundraiser is being held to support Meraki Laographic Arts as they prepare for the upcoming HDF competition in Orlando, Florida. Funds raised from the event will go towards supporting musicians, getting costumes, and securing hotels and team registrations.
In a comment made to TNH, Dimitri Carabas, the founder of Meraki Laographic Arts, shared how he felt to be hosting the Tavli Tournament for the very first time.
“We are all pretty excited to hopefully host the first of many. Of course, nervous about getting a good turnout, but optimistic,” Carabas told TNH.

The Tavli Tournament will take place at the Pan Arcadian Federation Of America Geros Tou Morea at 39-09 27th Street in Long Island City, NY, and will consist of tavli games, good company and drinks and light snacks.

Carabas added how he hopes to host several events in the coming months in addition to this fundraiser.
“Either before or during our seminar we will host with a teacher from Greece who will be teaching dances from Evros,” he said.
“We will also be trying to host at least two to three more events before January. Small ‘glendis’ (parties) and an evening or two of live music.”
“We’re looking forward to having an evening with friends old and new with Rebetika playing in the background with some intense competition.”
