Remembering Lela Karagianni: Washington’s Hellenic Center Prepares to Mark OXI Day
On September 8, 1944, the heroine of the National Resistance and leader of the “Bouboulina” organization, Lela Karagianni, was executed by the German occupation forces in Dafni (Chaidari/Athensted area). Her sacrifice took place just a few weeks before the long-awaited liberation of the city, sealing the end of a dark period for our homeland.This historical milestone, combined with the fact that our great national anniversary of October 28th is approaching, turns the thoughts of all of us in the Greek Diaspora to the heroes who held the flag of freedom high. Among these bright figures, Lela Karagianni stands out as a woman whose name became synonymous with sacrifice and selfless love for fellow human beings.
The “Bouboulina” of the Occupation, a mother of seven children, chose to turn her home into a living headquarters for resistance, espionage, and humanitarian aid. Today, from the heart of Washington, we must highlight the deeper message of her sacrifice, which remains relevant for Hellenism abroad:
— A Struggle Above and Beyond Parties: The greatness of Lela Karagianni lies in the fact that her actions are recognized today across the entire political spectrum. She did not fight for ideologies or party benefits.
Her sole purpose was the freedom of the homeland.
— Solidarity and Help to Anyone in Need: Her network made no distinctions during the German occupation. She offered a helping hand to every persecuted person—from smuggling Allied soldiers to the Middle East, to saving Jewish families from annihilation.
— The Ultimate Example of Courage: Even when she fell into the hands of the conquerors and suffered horrific torture at Merlin Street, she did not bend. Until her final breath in front of the firing squad, she stood tall, reminding everyone of the meaning of the Greek soul.
As we remember today’s anniversary of her execution and march toward October 28th, Lela Karagianni teaches us that love for Greece and offering help to our neighbor are the values that keep us united. As Greeks abroad, we hold this heritage as our compass, promising to keep her memory alive and to continue to progress, proud of our common roots.
Honoring this glorious history, the Hellenic Center, as it always does, will hold its big celebration for the anniversary of “OXI” this year. We look forward to welcoming you all on October 28th at 7:00 PM to celebrate together, united, the strength and bravery of the Greek soul.
