Young adults in Greece are leaving the parental home at an average age of 31, the second-highest figure in the European Union after Croatia, according to Eurostat data for 2025. The average rose to 30.9 years from 30.7 in 2024, compared with an EU average of 26.3.
Eurostat links earlier departure to stronger youth employment. Greece’s youth employment rate reached 56.2% in 2025, below the EU average. But housing costs also appear central. A one-bedroom apartment in Athens now costs the equivalent of 70.2% of the average monthly wage, while a two-bedroom apartment requires 93.6%. A Eurofound study showed 79% of young people in Greece spend more than 40% of their income on housing, the highest share recorded.
As rents climbed 10.1% in 2025, many young adults remained with their parents or turned increasingly to shared housing arrangements.
