Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. members had out ticket vouchers for food provided at Greek Picnic on Sept. 23.
Texas Wesleyan University’s Greek organizations came together Sept. 23 to host a Greek picnic, giving students a chance to learn more about Greek life organizations on campus.
The picnic, hosted at Kay Granger Mall, featured music, food and tabling opportunities for students to interact with these organizations. The event was held in support of National Hazing Prevention Week, making the picnic an opportunity to show students what Greek life can look like on campus.
National Hazing Prevention Week is observed each year as an opportunity to bring attention to hazing and encourage students and organizations to create safer environments. For Greek organizations, the week provides an opportunity to have conversations about what healthy involvement and leadership should look like.
Bijon Willis, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., said the event was created through collaboration between the Greek organizations.
“The Greeks got together and tried to collab with one another just so that we’re able to show Texas Wesleyan what Greek life would look like,” Willis said.
Willis said the university has had a lack of Greek life in recent years, making the picnic an opportunity to introduce students to organizations currently on campus and encourage more students to become involved.
Greek organizations are beginning to rebuild their presence at Texas Wesleyan with making their return in the 2025-26 school year. The picnic gave students a chance to see what Greek life has to offer.
The event also provided a way for students from different parts of campus to meet each other.
“Honestly, just networking, being able to be around each other, get to know one another because we’re so focused on being in our own little majors in our different buildings,” Willis said.
Inessa Pasechnikov, a bio-chemistry major and a member of Connect College Ministry, said the event caught her attention through its music, food and campus presence. She said she heard the music and followed it to the event.
Pasechnikov said she was familiar with the Greek organizations on campus and appreciated having an event where students could see the organizations and learn more about them.
“I think it’s really cool that we have a place where they can actually be showcased and seen,” Pasechnikov said.
For Willis, Greek life is about more than just gathering at events. She explains that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated focuses on sisterhood, service and giving back to the community.
“We really focus on trying to build up our community, try to build up the young women around, as well… and trying to make Texas Wesleyan better.”
