Lalor North Primary School celebrated its 55th anniversary with a concert at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre in South Morang that featured a distinct Greek flavour through its students.
The school marked their milestone year with music, dance and lots of emotion.
Students from the school’s unique Greek-English Bilingual Program were able to showcase their learning in the event honouring the school’s 55th anniversary.
The event was hosted with confidence and great success by the school captains, one of whom being Year 6 student in the Greek Program Chrysoula Pappas.
Chrysoula said she was particularly proud of both her own participation and that of her classmates in celebrating the school’s 55th birthday.
During the concert, students from the senior classes of the Greek Program performed the traditional island song “Dance, dance” (Χορέψετε, χορέψετε), first in its authentic traditional form and then in a contemporary remix with a more dynamic modern rhythm.
The younger classes also contributed by performing the song “Disco” by the late Greek-Australian songwriter Christos Ioannidis.
50 years of the Greek Program
In 2027, Lalor North Primary School is preparing to celebrate 50 years of its Greek Bilingual Program.
Lalor North is known for its unique Greek–English Bilingual Program, standing as the only public school in Australia that offers the comprehensive program wherein approximately 50% of the curriculum is delivered in Greek and the other half in English.
The program follows the contemporary Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and is delivered by specialist teachers with many years of experience.
The program has grown strongly in recent years as the number of students participating in it has doubled, with it now growing to four Greek classes worth of pupils.
