Greek-Cypriot author Alex Michaelides novel named among the 50 best thrillers of the 21st century

Greek-Cypriot author Alex Michaelides has received international recognition after his bestselling psychological thriller ‘The Silent Patient’ was selected as one of the 50 greatest thriller novels of the 21st century, earning a place alongside works by some of the genre’s most celebrated writers.

The ranking was published by The New York Times Book Review, which invited 291 crime writers, editors, booksellers, librarians, and avid readers to nominate their ten favorite thrillers released since 2000. Among those who participated were renowned authors including Stephen King, John Grisham, Gillian Flynn, and Lee Child.

The Silent Patient secured the 36th position on the list. The novel tells the story of Theo Faber, a London-based psychotherapist who becomes fascinated by Alicia Berenson, a woman who refuses to speak after being accused of murdering her husband.

One of the writers who voted for the novel was bestselling author Blake Crouch, whose own thriller Dark Matter was also included in the prestigious ranking.

Born in Cyprus to a Greek Cypriot father and an English mother, Michaelides studied English Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge. Before becoming a novelist, he worked as a screenwriter for several years, eventually deciding to pursue fiction after becoming disillusioned with the film industry.

Published by Celadon Books in February 2019, The Silent Patient debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times Best Seller list and has sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide. The novel also won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Mystery & Thriller in 2019.

The story is now set to reach the big screen after Sony Pictures acquired the film rights in July 2026, with Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment joining the project as producers.

The distinction further cements Michaelides’ reputation as one of the leading contemporary thriller writers, placing his debut novel among the defining works of the genre in the modern era.

Following the success of The Silent Patient, Michaelides published his second novel, The Maidens, in 2021. The mystery, set at Cambridge University, climbed to No. 2 on The New York Times fiction bestseller list.
