Disney’s Biggest ‘Harry Potter’ Rival Is Officially Streaming on Netflix For The First Time

Harry Potter is still one of the defining benchmarks for young-adult fantasy on screen, and plenty of adaptations have struggled in comparison. Eragon, The Golden Compass, Artemis Fowl, and The Dark Is Rising all chased some version of that same hidden-world appeal and franchise potential, only to stall after a single film.

Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson has always had one of the strongest claims as a true rival, given the series’ massive book sales and its mix of Greek mythology, modern humor, and a distinctly relatable young hero. But its first screen adaptation never fully landed, with the Logan Lerman movies drifting far enough from the source material that Riordan himself repeatedly distanced from them.

Disney Put ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ on Netflix Ahead of Season 3

What makes the current moment especially interesting is that, just as HBO moves toward its Harry Potter TV reboot in 2027, Percy Jackson appears to have finally found the adaptation that works — and Disney has now reportedly decided to license that version to its biggest streaming rival.

As of Oct. 4, the first two seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians are streaming globally on Netflix, the first time the Disney+ original has ever been available outside the Disney ecosystem. Netflix announced the arrival itself with a post reading “Earthshaker. Stormbringer. Son of Poseidon. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now on Netflix!” The move comes out of a licensing agreement between Disney Entertainment and Netflix that Variety first reported on Oct. 2, a deal that also sends all five Ice Age movies, Will Trent, Shifting Gears, Felicity and a selection of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation titles like Soul and Raya and the Last Dragon to the service on a rolling schedule into early 2027.

Both seasons stay on Disney+ and Hulu throughout, and season 3, which premieres Nov. 20, is not part of the deal and will stream only on Disney+. The math behind the timing isn’t hard to work out. The Netflix window opens roughly seven weeks before the new season, which is just enough runway for a newcomer to get through sixteen episodes and arrive at the premiere invested. Disney is essentially using Netflix’s 325 million subscribers as a marketing channel, which would have sounded absurd in 2019 when the company pulled its entire library off Netflix to launch Disney+ as a walled garden.

‘Percy Jackson’ Is Expanding Beyond Disney+ at a Key Moment

For Disney, the bet seems reasonable, if not guaranteed. The so-called Netflix effect is real enough that studios have stopped pretending otherwise, with shows like Suits finding enormous second audiences years after their original runs once they hit the bigger platform. Percy Jackson arguably needs that boost more than its pedigree suggests. The first season was Disney+’s most-watched show of 2024, but the two-year gap before season 2 ran from Dec. 2025 into Jan. 2026 is a long time in kids’ TV, where the core audience ages out fast.

Season 3 also happens to be the show’s most consequential stretch creatively, since it adapts The Titan’s Curse, the one book in the original five that Fox never filmed, meaning the series is about to go somewhere no screen version has gone before while introducing Nico di Angelo, a character book readers would probably rank among the most important in the entire saga. With the Potter reboot around, Disney clearly isn’t content to let its demigod franchise stay a well-kept secret.
