Chef behind Boston’s top Greek restaurants debuts solo concept in Chelmsford

A chef known for working in some of Boston’s best Greek restaurants has opened his first solo concept — and it’s in his hometown.

Brendan Pelley, who serves as the culinary director of Xenia Greek Hospitality, opened Kri Kri Grill in his native Chelmsford on Aug. 7.

Located at 18 Boston Road, Kri Kri Grill is described as a “modern Greek taverna” that serves “scratch-made Mediterranean food rooted in tradition and driven by bold, vibrant flavor,” according to its website.

Named after a wild mountain goat of Crete, Kri Kri Grill has 36 seats inside and a seasonal outdoor patio. The eatery also offers takeout, delivery and catering options.

The restaurant is extremely personal for Pelley, as it pays homage to his Greek-American heritage and is inspired by the many Greek tavernas he fell in love with while visiting Greece.

Diners can choose from a selection of shareable appetizers, customizable pitas and bowls, fresh salads and sides. Everything is made in house using traditional Greek techniques and the best seasonal ingredients. Dishes are made to order as well.

Traditional plates include baked lamb shank, chicken lemonata, taverna eggplant and pastitsio, which is a traditional Greek baked pasta dish made with ground meat and béchamel sauce. Meanwhile, blackboard specials highlight a sustainable selection of fish and seafood in addition to seasonally foraged ingredients.

Additionally, there is a selection of ice cream in flavors such as Greek coffee, vanilla and olive oil, baklava and the Kri Kri Sundae with tahini caramel and candied sour cherries. There is also Pelley’s personal homage to the historic Chelmsford Ginger Ale with a nostalgic float. A selection of imported Greek beers and wines are also available.

Kri Kri Grill is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The restaurant will eventually be open daily, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday.

Pelley possesses more than 30 years of culinary experience, with a focus in Greek cuisine. As part of Xenia Greek Hospitality, Pelley has brought critical recognition to the group’s concepts: Krasi, Greco, Bar Vlaha and Kaia.

These accolades include a James Beard Award nomination at Krasi, Bar Vlaha being named best Greek restaurant in Boston by Boston Magazine and Kaia’s rare 5-star Boston Globe review. In addition to competing on “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Beat Bobby Flay,” Pelley has been featured in the New York Times, Bon Appétit and Boston Magazine.
