The smell of fresh Mediterranean food will be back in the air in Beaumont this weekend as the annual Mediterranean Festival returns to Saint Michael Orthodox Church.
The festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Saint Michael Orthodox Church at the corner of North and 15th streets in Beaumont.
Organizers said the event is a chance to share culture and faith with the community through food, dancing and church tours. The church recently celebrated 125 years, and organizers said the festival grew out of earlier church meals that began in the early 1900s.
This year’s festival will include performances by a Greek troupe, along with children from the church performing Lebanese dance, organizers said. Attendees will also be able to tour the church.
Food will be served both inside the hall and outside, with organizers saying everything is made by the church community rather than outside vendors. Offerings include gyros, falafel and pastries, along with bread made at the church, including Syrian bread and pita.
Tickets for food and other items are $1 each, organizers said, with a ticket booth and menus available so attendees can plan what they want to buy without handling cash throughout the festival.
A raffle will also be held Saturday for a trip for two that includes airfare and seven nights on a cruise to the Greek islands. Organizers said raffle tickets cost $100, and people do not have to be present to win.
