Tennis is returning to Greece’s capital for the first time in 35 years, with the WTA announcing a new 250-level tournament in Athens in July.
The event will be held July 13-19 at the Stadion Sports Center at OAKA immediately following Wimbledon, played on hard courts with 32-player singles and 16-team doubles draws.
Greek star Maria Sakkari welcomed the news.
“Being able to walk onto the court in my homeland and hear Greek fans will be one of the greatest moments of my career,” she said, adding that the tournament represents “a truly special moment and a great opportunity to showcase Greek tennis and inspire young athletes.”
