A global competition exploring the language of image and sound
The «Preisner Scoring Competition», organised by the Municipal Cultural Centre and the Municipality of Bielsko-Biała in Poland under the artistic direction of leading film composer Zbigniew Preisner, aims to showcase and support emerging creators by bringing them into direct contact with the professional world of the film and music industries.
For this 2nd edition, the challenge centres on the inseparable relationship between image and sound: contestants are invited to compose original music for a short film created by Preisner himself. Preisner entrusted the task of selecting the finalists to a distinguished panel, on which Antonis Kyzoulis serves alongside violinist Radosław Pujanek, respected music journalist Paweł Sztompke and conductor Karol Szwech. The competition’s final jury includes internationally renowned figures such as Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared, film historian Anette Insdorf, leading sound engineer Geoff Foster and director Petr Zelenka.
Antonis Kyzoulis: the melodic voice of the Aegean on the international stage
Born in Rhodes, where he still lives, Antonis Kyzoulis is one of the most distinctive and quietly influential composers of his generation. His extensive body of work ranges from theatre and orchestral music to song cycles, choral works and music for the performing arts. His distinctive style has left its mark on the cultural life of the Dodecanese and the Greek regions beyond Athens.
His music, deeply lyrical, narrative and at the same time contemporary, has long been in dialogue with poetry and drama. He has received an award at the Thessaloniki Festival, while his song cycle setting poems by Cavafy, performed by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Betty Harlaftis, was recorded by the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra and broadcast on the Second Programme. His selection for the jury of the «Preisner Scoring Competition» confirms that his art transcends geographical boundaries and holds its own in the centres of European symphonic and film music.
Zbigniew Preisner: the genius of melancholy and his love of Greece
At the helm of the competition is the legendary Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner, one of the most important film composers in the history of the 7th art. He became known worldwide through his celebrated collaboration with director Krzysztof Kieślowski, composing masterpieces such as «The Decalogue», «The Double Life of Véronique» and the iconic «Three Colours» trilogy (Blue, White, Red), as well as the monumental «Requiem for My Friend».
For decades, Preisner has maintained a deep personal bond with Greece, and particularly with Rhodes, where he spends long periods of time, drawing inspiration from the island’s light and history. The meeting of this internationally renowned artist and Antonis Kyzoulis at the competition highlights the invisible yet powerful cultural ties that unite people with a shared vision of art.
The presence of a Rhodes-born artist on the jury of this international competition is an honour for Greek culture and the arts, demonstrating that Greek musical thought has the influence and stature to assess and shape the future of film music worldwide.
