Most people think of gyros as straight-up Greek street food, but the real story is way messier and somehow leads straight to Chicago. This video is part food history lesson and part love letter to meat spinning on a stick. We’ll trace how a dish born in the Ottoman Empire ended up in American diners and mall food courts everywhere, then I’ll show you how to make your own classic Greek-American gyro cone at the crib like a total psycho. Let’s cook.

Nothing beats a gyro from The Works in Glenview!
Dairy and meat is weird together.
What is the purpose of your vertical spit? Your loaf is sitting flat on its fat end, it's not rotating, and I'm not sure but I don't think that loaf will fall over or break apart, ya know, with the meat glue and all. I bet you could do it without skewering it. Unless you're relying on heat conduction from the spit to cook the insides, there are better less weird ways.
Dude your video is playing music so loud it’s drowning you out, not good
Ok Pancakes, Beef Jerky and Tarter sauce…..
Great video. I like it that you prefaced it with a bit of food history.😀
Blar blar get on with it ..im out bruv
I grew up in Chicago and in the late eighties I remember all the old guys suddenly talking about "gy-ros". As a picky boy, I didn't try one till my late teens but ever since I love them. My wife is from rural Ohio and had never heard of gyro but whenever we go visit she can't wait to have one too.. awesome video. Way above my cooking skills. I'll just wait till I get back home and hit a neighborhood spot.
You lost me at polyphosphate
😲I'd eat the living $hit out of that 😲 Sorry…that got away from me a little. 😏
They don't want you to know this but you can join a restaurant depot and go buy the 20 Lb lamb/beef gyrocone from Kronos company. One of the best purchases I've made 😂
In the long end , us white boys are not invited😅😅😅
A lot of jumping about nothing
That looks fantastic! I live in the Greekest town outside of Greece, Tarpon Springs, FL. You can’t swing a dead lamb by the tail without hitting a Greek restaurant, so I’ll probably never try making them. Just too many great options within a 5 minute walk of my house.
Fantastic editing and just a really well produced video. Thanks for keeping it fun.
DAT's ALOT'a WORK & $$$ JUST TO MAKE 2 SANGWICHS…BUT I IMAGINE IT's WORTH IT….
Hmm. . Lamb is very hard to get where I am may have to experiment to see if pork may work. In the lamb roll. As long as it isn't Boar should fit a similar profile
1st Gyro right off lower Wacker 1978,had it and couldn’t stop thinkin about it till I got another one…lol
This is just "doner" of the Turks. Go to Germany, you will find 1 in every corner lmao
Onion rings with the gyros are just the most fabulous combo.
Gyros hit Chicago like a storm in the mid 70’s the best thing to hit Chicago in years
The Best Gyro outside of Chitown was Sub Dock 2 in Joliet. Every sliver of meat had just the right amt of carmalization on it, which is the secret for the perfect Gyro. It rounds out the flavor the is hard to find anywhere else. Some place toss the slivers on a hot grill to try and get that crispness, but it tastes burnt. Also the amount of meat you got for one would be what other places charged for two. They also had a huge menu from fresh subs to chicken to pork to beef and even fish dishes everyday. There were als 6-8 homemade soups. Bread was brought in fresh everyday from the bakery downtown. I can't tell you how many times friends came with saying they weren't hungry, just to order a full meal 5 min later. If you got a gyros platter; and you finished the whole thing in 1 sitting; you'd be in a food coma 5 min later. Sadly they sold and it's now just another taco joint. From what I've heard, getting food off a traveling roach…taco trucks is better.
I learned to make gyro from an old greek woman who spoke bad english and it is nothing like I have ever seen anywhere else. It is similar, yet so very much different. Pork yes, no spinning tower and made on a stove old style, very old style. And it is so tasty that it's hard to stop, it's serverd in much the same way, pita or wrap with greek salad, onions, feta and tzatziki sause. The key is what she did with the meat and I have seen nothing like it outside my own kitchen and hers. It's a gyros clear as day, but also different in ways that is hard to explain. Best of all no food processer needed, actually nothing using elecricity beyond what the stove uses and she used a wood fired stove, which sort of explain a lot of why it is so different. Funny right?
Ofcourse America invented the fake Gyro. My brother in Christ a real Gyro is made with Pork.
Yours Truly, a Cypriot.
Ground meat? Just make patties and fry in skillet or on grill. Like hamburgers! Simple and easy! Who knew?
I liked and subscribed because:
– Greek food
– my sister married into a Witt family
– I loved the simple, to the point historical backstory
– your style
I expect more great food vids from you dude – Keep ‘em comin’!
Hold the tri-sodium-phosphate – my compromised kidneys can’t handle either the sodium or the phosphate
More garlic, er cowbell!
American 'gyros'. Actual gyros is stacked sliced meat, usually pork or chicken
Just because you can sneak a little mayo into your tzatziki, it doesn't mean you should.
Mayo is an abomination, a crime against food, and a disappointment to God. Don't dirty your hands with toum, go ahead and make a real tzatziki.
The non-aggro crag.
I wish you all that one day you eat the real doner in Türkiye. We use direct marinated meat instead of ground meat and no spice or those glue things.
Maybe it is because i am european, but i would definitly go with the greek version (not the american minced pork version).
Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adVZNjXpDq8 .
Which does not mean that this recipe does not taste good, but gyros is NOT made of minced meat – at least in my opinion.
Guys PLEASE try using some corn starch with water/milk & or eggs instead of extra chemicals to bind your meat better. I know it sounds all hippy but the less trash in our bodies the better!
