More foreign students choose Greece

Greece’s universities are attracting a growing number of international students, with approximately 1,200 enrolled in 23 undergraduate programs and another 2,000 studying in 268 foreign-language postgraduate programs, according to Study in Greece, the country’s organization promoting international higher education.

The expansion began with the University of Athens’ first English-language undergraduate program, launched in October 2020 with 28 students from 10 countries.

The program, focused on archaeology, history and ancient Greek literature, charges tuition. Preparations are underway for 10 additional undergraduate programs, potentially starting in the 2027-28 academic year.

Medicine accounts for the largest share of international undergraduate enrollment, with about 900 students. Programs in other fields include artificial intelligence, business administration, law and classical studies.

Annual undergraduate tuition ranges from €6,000 to €15,000, while postgraduate fees range from €3,500 to €12,000.

Study in Greece president Christos Michalakelis estimates that each international student contributes an average of €20,000 annually to the Greek economy through tuition and living expenses.

But officials say broader recruitment efforts and stronger international outreach are needed.

The organization also faces financial uncertainty, relying heavily on self-financing and occasional European Union funding.

Michalakelis warned that insufficient support threatens its ability to promote Greek universities abroad and guide prospective students through applications.
