WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — The Wilkes-Barre Greek Food Festival is back at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, bringing three days of homemade Greek dishes and pastries prepared by parish members.
This long-running tradition runs twice a year, returning every spring and fall. The event serves as the church’s largest fundraiser, helping support daily operations and parish ministries.
Menu highlights include gyros, Greek roasted chicken dinners, dolmadakia, pastitsio, spanakopita, baklava, galaktoboureko and more.
Parish council member Dina Banas said longtime kitchen volunteers have helped teach younger parishioners how to prepare the festival’s dishes, carrying forward traditions rooted in the church community for more than a century.
“A lot of our grandparents and great-grandparents settled in Wilkes-Barre many years ago. This church started in the early 1920s, and it’s the same families. Fortunately, the recipes have been passed down. We enjoy it. We really do. We work very hard, but we would never not want to do this. We’ll do this for as long as we can,” said Banas.
Customers are encouraged to place orders at least two hours in advance, either online or by phone, though walk-ins are also welcome. Orders can be picked up inside the church hall, and payment can be made by cash or credit card.
The festival will continue from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday at 32 E. Ross St. For more information, visit the festival’s website or Facebook page.
