Claims that PTSD, anxiety disorders, gastrointestinal conditions, or an open-ended category of chronic pain are routinely approved on a case-by-case basis should be treated with caution, since they are not established by the authorized Greek product information.
Prescriber requirements. Initial cannabis prescriptions must come from designated specialist physicians:
- Anesthesiologists
- Neurologists
- Oncology pathologists
- Infectious disease pathologists
- Rheumatologists
General practitioners can issue repeat prescriptions after a specialist provides the initial authorization. This specialist requirement creates access barriers while maintaining medical oversight.
On foreign prescriptions. The categorical claim that Greece rejects all foreign prescriptions is inaccurate. Greece’s National Contact Point for Cross-border Healthcare states that qualifying prescriptions issued in another EU or EEA country are generally recognized in Greece, subject to Greek law, medicine authorization, availability, and applicable national restrictions. That recognition does not by itself establish that a foreign medical cannabis prescription can be dispensed for a Greek medicinal cannabis product, because cannabis carries additional controlled-drug and medicinal-product rules. Greece also restricts importation of final medicinal cannabis products containing more than 0.2% THC for domestic consumption, which creates a separate issue for travelers carrying cannabis medicines.
The practical advice is to confirm your specific prescription and product with an official Greek healthcare authority, a physician, and the dispensing pharmacy before relying on it. For prescriptions issued outside the EU or EEA, do not assume a rule in either direction without checking.
On costs. Medicinal cannabis pricing in Greece is set and published by product, strength, formulation, and package rather than by a generic per-gram figure, and the relevant authorities were still publishing pricing consultations during 2026. Check the current official Greek price bulletin for the specific product rather than relying on estimated ranges. Reimbursement status likewise applies to specific products and should be confirmed rather than assumed across every associated medical or consultation cost.
