With an anniversary concert of great symbolic significance, the Philharmonia Orchestra of Athens celebrates ten years since its founding, with a programme that captures its artistic vision: under the direction of its founder Byron Fidetzis, it showcases modern Greek art music through its ongoing dialogue with the leading European repertoire.
The programme opens with Georgios Lambelet’s Η γιορτή (The Festival), one of the most significant figures of the Ionian School and a pioneer of Greek symphonic composition. In Respighi’s Concerto Gregoriano, the composer’s third violin concerto, the music develops motifs drawn from Gregorian chant. Mozart’s motet Exsultate, jubilate, written for the celebrated castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, reaches its climax in the ecstatic Alleluia, while Mendelssohn’s Psalm No. 42 combines the polyphonic tradition of Bach with the composer’s romantic sensibility.
