The final weekend of July has passed, and nothing can stop the biggest release of the year so far. Whether you’ve been lucky enough to catch it on IMAX or have had your breath taken on a humble-sized big screen, Christopher Nolan‘s most ambitious film yet, The Odyssey, seems to be blowing the world away. Almost universally, both fans and critics have gushed over Nolan’s latest masterpiece, with the film averaging 94% on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes and Joe Schmidt labeling it an “unrivaled cinematic spectacle” in his review for Collider.
Courtesy of another huge weekend at the box office — where it outperformed the total gross of all other movies in the U.S. combined — The Odyssey has now reached an eye-watering $639 million worldwide, against a $250 million production budget. This leaves the epic Matt Damon-led journey in a great position to soon hit the billion-dollar mark, which would be Nolan’s third film to do so after both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. But when it comes to Greek stories played out on the big screen, The Odyssey wasn’t your only option last weekend.
Making its theatrical debut in the U.S. on July 24 was Hadestown: The Musical, a live stage recording of the musical of the same name, captured during a trio of live performances on February 28 and March 1, 2025. Despite being released in fewer American theaters than almost all the box office top ten, Hadestown: The Musical finished an impressive fourth in the weekend ranks, scoring a box office haul of $9.6 million. In doing so, the film has made history as the second-biggest ever opening for a Broadway live capture, following Disney’s Hamilton. Thanks to this success, Crosswalk and LD Entertainment have announced they are expanding the initial 5-day event, with dates and showtimes added moving forward.

Another Bleecker Street Musical Movie is On the Way
Just as Hadestown: The Musical was heading into theaters, it was officially announced that Universal Pictures Content Group and Bleecker Street’s event cinema division, Crosswalk, had acquired the rights to George Michael: The Faith Tour, which is set to hit theaters and IMAX later in 2026. The film was shot at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy during the European leg of the Faith Tour in
1988, and even features never-before-seen footage of Michael, with the late, great musician’s longtime collaborator Andy Morahan directing.
