Nana Mouskouri honoured with Germany’s Order of Merit – The Greek Herald

Greek-born singer Nana Mouskouri has received one of Germany’s highest state honors, recognising her decades-long contribution to music, cultural exchange and international understanding, according to tovima.com

On Monday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented Mouskouri with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany during a ceremony in Berlin. She was among 21 recipients honored on the occasion of German Unity Day for their contributions to democratic values, social cohesion and international cooperation.

The award holds special significance for Mouskouri, whose international career gained momentum in Germany during the early 1960s. Her recording of “Weiße Rosen aus Athen” (“White Roses From Athens”) became a major hit and helped establish her as a familiar name among German-speaking audiences.

The recognition also reflects Mouskouri’s work beyond music, including her advocacy for peace and freedom and her role in promoting cultural connections worldwide.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Mouskouri has performed and recorded in numerous languages, including Greek, German, French, English, Spanish and Italian. She also served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and represented Greece in the European Parliament.
