MELBOURNE LAMB SOUVLAKI – Australian version of a Greek Street Food
In this episode of The Hunger Fixer’s food tour of Melbourne we try a Melbourne Lamb Souvlaki.
The Souvlaki is a traditional Greek street food. in Australia, the Souvlaki has been modified to include tender Australian lamb and the Pita used is much larger too!
The juicy lamb is spit roasted on a rotisserie served on a warm Pita bread with lettuce, tomato, onion and Tzatziki sauce.
The result was the ultimate Lamb wrap. This is one of the best street food I’ve ever had.

Why this is called souvlaki in Melb but kebab in Sydney…. Confusing
Is this the best lamb souvlaki in Melbourne? New shop? I used to like Lambs at Lygon St it was great but since changed ownership the quality became inconsistent, sometimes great sometimes bad. Stalactites on Russell Lonsdale St also good but expensive.

Looks good but its not a souvlaki , its a gyro and here in greece we make it with pork and not lamb ! 10 times better , peace ✌️

When I lived in Melbourne, it was called souvlaki, nothing else. Lambs in Richmond & Prahran, & Stalactites in the city were the champs. Hopefully still are.

Gyro vs. Souvlaki
Closely related to Souvlaki, GYROS are pitas stuffed with meat shaved off a spinning rotisserie wheel. GYRO pitas have the same ingredients as souvlaki pitas. The key difference between GYRO and SOUVLAKI is that the meat is shredded in Greek GYROS as opposed to the cubed meat used in SOUVLAKI.
Interestingly, people in Athens include kebabs and gyros when they refer to souvlaki, instead calling the skewers KALAMAKI. . And in Athens, the locals have a broad definition of SOUVLAKI.
I have not eaten souvlaki for years now and watching this clip definitely makes me want to go there immediately and get a lamb one…. The lamb sure looks good!
