Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ getting the musical treatment – in animation

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Odyssey,’ starring Matt Damon as the ancient Greek hero, is slated for release this summer, with the world premiere taking place in Greece on July 16.

Hot on the heels of Christopher Nolan’s big-screen adaptation of Homer’s “Odyssey,” US producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that he is reimagining the ancient Greek tale as an animated musical titled “Epic.”

The project follows the hero Odysseus on his 10-year journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, blending the classic narrative with a contemporary musical format.

Bruckheimer, known for blockbuster franchises such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Top Gun,” revealed the project in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying development is under way. The announcement gained traction online after circulating widely on TikTok.

Creator Jorge Rivera-Herrans is collaborating with Bruckheimer on the production, alongside Kevin Weaver, president of Atlanta Music Group. The musical remains in early development but is expected to be presented to film studios and streaming platforms in the coming week.

The film would mark Bruckheimer’s first animated feature, though he has prior experience with music-driven projects, including adaptations like “Flashdance.”

Rivera-Herrans first developed “Epic” as a thesis project while studying at the University of Notre Dame. He began sharing the creative process on TikTok during the Covid pandemic, building a large following. By 2022, he was releasing excerpts of the musical online.

Independently released EP albums from the project topped iTunes charts and later dominated soundtrack rankings, at one point holding nine of the top 10 spots.
