Athens duo Hollow Shift avoid that trap on WAR by remembering that atmosphere only works when there’s genuine emotion underneath it.
Across the ep, the band build a world that feels cinematic without becoming self-indulgent. The Greek pair clearly understand how to create tension. Alexander Zamparas’ production is layered and immersive, drawing from darkwave, post-punk and synthwave influences without sounding like a museum piece dedicated to the 1980s. There’s a modern sheen running through the release that stops it from disappearing into nostalgia.
Hephaestus opens the collection. Its the highlight of the trilogy too, A class dance beat It feels grand and mythological, carrying the weight of its namesake while allowing Jessica Bell’s vocal performance to guide the listener through the darkness. Her voice remains one of Hollow Shift’s strongest assets throughout the EP. Rather than opting for theatrical excess, she delivers the material with restraint, making the emotional moments hit harder when they arrive.
Nothing Dies Quietly is arguably the release’s strangest moment. Dark drum and synths work together to create something interesting. The songwriting feels most focused here, balancing melody and atmosphere in a way that never loses sight of the human element. It captures the internal conflict that WAR sets out to explore and delivers it through memorable hooks rather than simply relying on mood.
By the time Frequencies Will Stumble arrives, the record has fully settled into its shadowy aesthetic. The track is rich with texture and detail, rewarding repeated listens. Small production flourishes emerge from the mix each time, demonstrating a level of care that elevates the material beyond many of the genre’s contemporaries.
What works particularly well is Hollow Shift’s commitment to creating a cohesive experience.
The production is so polished and immersive that some of the songs risk blending into a similar emotional tempo. A few sharper dynamic shifts or more unexpected musical detours could have made the contrasts between tracks even more powerful. While the atmosphere is consistently excellent, listeners craving a truly explosive moment may find themselves waiting for a bigger payoff that never quite arrives.
Still, these are relatively minor criticisms of a release that demonstrates a clear artistic identity. Hollow Shift know exactly who they are, and WAR succeeds because it never chases trends or tries to be something it isn’t.
