Greek Film Festival of Sydney to host Australian premiere of ‘Murderess’ at new location

The 29th Greek Film Festival of Sydney has unveiled one of its key pictures of this year’s edition, announcing the screening of “Murderess” that will headline a series of sessions at a brand-new location in Moore Park.

The Film Festival, organised by the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, will showcase the award-winning period film by director Eva Nathena on Saturday 19 October, 8.30pm, at Palace Cinemas Moore Park, a new site that has been added into the event’s schedule.

The screening will be the Australian premiere of the film, one of many that have been planned for the 12-day event this coming October.

Murderess (Φόνισσα) is an adaptation of Greek writer Alexandros Papadiamantis’ original novel of the same name, and stars actress Karyofyllia Karabeti in the lead role.

It is set in 1900s rural Greece wherein the patriarchal society brings women to a breaking point, leading the protagonist to turn into a murderess that embarks on a quest to “release” young girls from their social fate.

Harry Danalis, GOC of NSW President, stressed the significance of expanding the Film Festival to new locations by offering “high quality Greek Cinematography to Sydney cine-friends with more options than our standard home of Palace Norton Street”.

“Moore Park is an exciting new venue that we hope will become our second home for our Greek Film Festival in the future,” the President said.

Nia Karteris, Chair of the Greek Film Festival of Sydney, added that they are ecstatic to have secured the picture for this year’s program.

“We are beyond thrilled to have secured Karyofyllia Karabeti’s latest acting work as part of our 29th Greek Film Festival. “Murderess” by Eva Nathena makes us proud to present Greece’s filmmaking abilities to the rest of the world through our special premiering events in Sydney,” Karteris said.
