The music of Greece is as diverse and celebrated as its history. Greek music separates into two parts: Greek traditional music and Byzantine music, with more eastern sounds. These compositions have existed for millennia: they originated in the Byzantine period and Greek antiquity; there is a continuous development which appears in the language, the rhythm, the structure and the melody. Music is a significant aspect of Hellenic culture, both within Greece and in the diaspora. Greek musical history extends far back into ancient Greece, since music was a major part of ancient Greek theater. Later influences from the Roman Empire, Eastern Europe and the Byzantine Empire changed the form and style of Greek music. Greek folk traditions are said to derive from the music played by ancient Greeks. There are said to be two musical movements in Greek folk music: Acritic songs and Klephtic songs. Akritic music comes from the 9th century akrites, or border guards of the Byzantine Empire. Following the end of the Byzantine period, klephtic music arose before the Greek Revolution, developed among the kleftes, warriors who fought against the Ottoman Empire. Klephtic music is monophonic and uses no harmonic accompaniment.

The Byzantine Greeks (or Byzantines) were a medieval Greek-speaking Orthodox Christian people. They were the main inhabitants of the lands of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire), of Constantinople and Asia Minor (modern Turkey), the Greek islands, Cyprus, and portions of the southern Balkans, and formed large minorities, or pluralities, in the coastal urban centres of the Levant and northern Egypt. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Byzantine Greeks self-identified as Rhōmaîoi ("Romans"), but are referred to as "Byzantines" and "Byzantine Greeks" in modern historiography.
The Ottomans had begun their conquest of the Balkans and Greece in the late 14th century and early 15th century. In 1445, Ottoman-occupied Thessaly was recaptured by future emperor Constantine XI, at the time despot of Mystras, but there was little he could do against most of the other Ottoman territories. Emperor Constantine was defeated and killed in 1453 when the Ottomans finally captured Constantinople. After the fall of Constantinople, the Ottomans also captured Athens and the Aegean islands by 1458, but left a Byzantine despotate in the Peloponnese until 1460. The Venetians still controlled Crete and some ports, but otherwise the Ottomans controlled many regions of Greece except the mountains and heavily forested areas.

The first song is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard

Hello from Romania, former latin citizens of East Roman Empire. Only us and Greece remain from the original speakers
I am Kurdish and I love byzantine music. It's so strong and magical that it makes me feel like I have heard of this music in my previous lives. I feel like these melodies were there the whole time, and were gifted to me from my ancestors and now I remember them again. Dark but Godly
It's sounds very combine Like Singer from Italian opera, Mediterranean instruments and Middle East style of synchro. ❤️
just imagine leo iii blasting this in his headphones before shitting all over the greatest medieval empire, or alexios i putting his colleagues onto this on the way to antioch, or constantine xi depressingly listening to this in a late may, 1453 evening. full roman vibes
I myself am Scandinavian but I respect Byzantium for they knew good warriors when they saw them so I say Hail to Byzantium
Αμην

I want to commit a suicide😢. I am in love with Turkish music but after listening to this video now I know I was in love with Byzantium music whole my life. I was ignorant l thought Turks brought this kind of music from central Asia. Very sad to my ignorance😢. I am from northern Iraq I think it is time to leave Islam and go back to my original instinct.
