HALKIDIKI – The monumental work of modern Greek culture, ‘Axion Esti’ from the poetry of Odysseas Elytis and set to music by Mikis Theodorakis, was presented by the Municipality of Aristotle of Halkidiki on July 17 at the Port of Olympiada, overlooking the Aegean Sea and the illuminated walls of Ancient Stagira – the birthplace of the philosopher Aristotle.
The symbolism of the impressive presentation, performed by singer Vasilis Lekkas, was particularly powerful. The connection of ‘Axion Esti’ with the archaeological site highlighted the Greek cultural continuity and the coupling of eternal compositions of poetic creation, light and measure, musical lyricism, and philosophical thought.
The natural and archaeological landscape, as well as the high-quality production of the Municipality, functioned as a living backdrop, lending the performance a particularly refined aesthetic. The audience filled the sandy beach, singing along with passion and enthusiasm, admiring the musicians. The sudden rain did not allow the concert to be completed, but its artistic imprint had already been felt.

‘Axion Esti’ is a folk oratorio that combines poetry, music and narrative speech. In addition to Vasilis Lekkas, the following participated in the performance: Aristarchos Katsarkas, Reader and Narrator; Konstantinos Koutsouros, Psaltis; Manolis Androulidakis, on guitar; New Choir of the Municipality of Kalamaria; vocal ensemble In Chorus; and the Aristotle Camerata Orchestra.
The orchestra’s director and arranger was the distinguished conductor Kostis Papazoglou.
The landmark work was presented for the first time in Aristotle’s birthplace, six decades after its first, historic, live performance (at the Rex Theatre – Marika Kotopouli). It was a “musical ritual” of the Aristotelia festival, worthy of the timeless reach and intellectual radiance of legendary composer Mikis Theodorakis.

Mayor of Aristotelis Stelios Valianos stated: “By presenting this hymn in the historical and natural setting of Ancient Stagira, we send timeless messages of culture, humanism and collective memory from the birthplace of Aristotle. It was a top musical meeting, which highlighted our national heritage in its most appropriate environment. The Aristotelia is not just a series of events, but a seal of quality and cultural excellence for the whole of Macedonia.”
