Cyprus Migration Deputy Minister Says Efforts for a Solution Continue in Close Cooperation with Greece

NICOSIA – Ending the Turkish occupation and liberating our homeland remain our top priority, and in this struggle we are working in close cooperation with Greece, Cyprus Deputy Minister of Migration Nikolas Ioannides said Wednesday.

He stressed that this joint effort is a strategic necessity rooted in deep historical and national ties. He said the two countries are working toward a just, viable and functional solution in line with international law and the European acquis, and toward a sovereign and secure Cyprus without occupying troops or settlers, outdated guarantees or unilateral rights of intervention.

Speaking on behalf of the President of the Republic at an event organized by the Xylotymbou Community Council to mark the October 28, 1940 national anniversary, Ioannides noted that Cyprus and Greece, as two sovereign states, make use of their membership in the European Union and their international partnerships to strengthen security and defend their rights.

“At the same time, we are strengthening the Republic of Cyprus. Deterrence capabilities, a resilient economy, reliable institutions, social cohesion and education are sources of national strength. A strong state does not replace the effort to end the occupation. It supports that effort and makes it more effective,” he said.

Elsewhere in his address, the deputy minister referred to the significance of the national anniversary and the Greek nation’s “NO,” stressing that national resolve translates into greater strength when accompanied by a sense of responsibility and the active contribution of the entire people.

He also referred to Cyprus’ contribution to the struggle, noting that for Greek Cypriots, defending Greece was also linked to their own aspiration for self-determination and union with Greece.

Ioannides added that the bond between Cyprus and Greece is unbreakable and is reaffirmed daily through language, education and historical memory. This enduring bond, he said, places on both countries the responsibility to understand their shared journey and work consistently for the security and freedom of Hellenism.

Addressing the students, he urged them to learn their history so they can build the future with greater awareness.
