- PASOK’s victory in 1981 was a milestone in Greece’s political history, marking the people’s entry into power.
- The slogan “PASOK in government – the people in power” expresses the demand for social justice, participation and dignity by marginalised groups.
- The Change of 1981 brought significant social and institutional reforms, such as the National Health System and the strengthening of workers’ rights.
- Today, the greatest tribute to that victory is the continuation of the effort for social justice, equality and democracy, making politics a matter for the many.
In the message from the Secretary of the Prefectural Committee of PASOK on the 45th anniversary of the party’s great victory in 1981, Mr Panagiotis Boulieris states the following:
18 October 1981. A date that marked the modern political history of the country.
“PASOK in government – the people in power.”
Was it just a slogan?
No!
It was the essence of an entire era. The voice of people who for decades had been marginalised and were demanding participation, rights, social justice and dignity.
The Change of 1981 left a deep imprint on Greece. The National Health System, the recognition of the National Resistance, the strengthening of workers, and major social and institutional reforms changed the lives of millions of citizens.
Forty-five years later, however, is the greatest tribute to that historic victory merely nostalgia?
It is the continuation!
To give new meaning to the words social justice, dignity, equality and democracy. To make politics a matter for the many once again.
Because political change, ultimately, is a demand of society.
