Town of Greece approves 100% property tax exemption for permanently disabled veterans

GREECE, N.Y. — The Town of Greece opted into New York State’s new property tax exemption for permanently and totally disabled veterans; those eligible can now apply.

Veterans who’re eligible must apply by March 1, 2027, and property taxes would be 100% exempted.

Additionally, eligible disabled veterans will be exempted from certain special district changes, assessments, and ad valorem levies on their primary home.

The Greece Town Board unanimously voted for the exemption on Thursday night.

“Our Veterans gave everything in service to this country, and those who came home with permanent, service-connected disabilities have earned our support for the rest of their lives,” said Supervisor Jeffery McCann. “Offering this exemption is one meaningful way the Town of Greece can say thank you and help these veterans stay in the homes and the community they love. I encourage every Veteran who may qualify to reach out to our Assessor’s Office and apply.”

The Town of Greece said the exemption isn’t automatic, and those eligible are asked to apply through the town’s Assessor’s Office and give documentation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that details applicants’ permanently and totally disabled status.

After this, those approved will apply to the 2028 Town and County Tax Bill.

To get the required documentation, veterans can contact the Monroe County Veterans Service Agency at 585-753-6040. For questions about the exemption or the application process, call the Town of Greece Assessor’s Office at 585-723-3621.
