Musical tribute celebrates Haris Alexiou & Notis Sfakianakis – The Greek Herald

The music of two of Greece’s most recognisable voices filled Adelaide’s Hellenic Macedonian Cultural Centre on Sunday, 13 September, as the Vergina Greek Women’s Cultural Society of the Pan Macedonian Federation SA presented its 12th annual Musical Tribute to a sold-out audience.

This year’s tribute celebrated the music of Haris Alexiou and Notis Sfakianakis, bringing together an afternoon of songs that have resonated with generations of Greeks, both in Greece and throughout the diaspora.

Local Adelaide eight-piece ensemble Floga Band performed a two-hour program featuring some of the artists’ most memorable works, filled with love, longing, memory and emotion. Musical arrangements were led by Stamatis Dimitrakopoulos and Sofia Dimitrakopoulou.

Months of preparation, rehearsals and dedication went into the performance, with Floga Band bringing both kefi and soul to the stage while showcasing the calibre of professional musicians within Adelaide’s Greek community.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have musicians of this calibre within our own community,” Vergina President Nicole Genimahaliotis said.

“Floga Band didn’t simply perform the songs; they understood the emotion behind them and brought that to the stage. The kefi, musicianship and soul they gave to the afternoon were a huge part of what made the event so special.”

For Sofia Dimitrakopoulou, Vergina’s Events Coordinator, the Musical Tribute represented months of work both behind the scenes and on the stage, from helping shape the event and its program to preparing the musical arrangements alongside Stamatis Dimitrakopoulos.

“A lot of thought and preparation goes into bringing an event like this together. We wanted to create a program that did justice to two very different artists, while taking the audience on a musical journey they could connect with,” Ms Dimitrakopoulou said.

“To see a sold-out room singing along, responding to the music and sharing that experience together made all the preparation worthwhile. That connection with the audience is what makes this event so rewarding, and why Floga band loves performing.”

For Ms Genimahaliotis, that emotional connection to music was at the heart of this year’s tribute.

“Music has a remarkable way of carrying our memories with it. The songs may belong to the artists who created them, but over time they become part of our stories too. And when another generation discovers those same songs, they take on a new life,” she said.

The Musical Tribute has become an important part of Vergina’s cultural program. Established more than a decade ago by the women of the Society, the event was created as a way to celebrate Greek music and share it with the wider community.

Today, it continues to evolve while remaining grounded in the same purpose: preserving cultural connections and bringing different generations together through music.

“As a Society, we inherited something very special from the women who came before us,” Ms Genimahaliotis said.

“Our responsibility is not simply to preserve that legacy, but to keep giving it new life.”

Behind the success of the sold-out afternoon was also the significant work of the Vergina committee and a wider group of community volunteers.

The Society acknowledged committee members Sofia Dimitrakopoulou, Maria Genimahaliotis, Agathoula Karkafiris, Katerina Malakozis, Leah Metaxas, Zoe Metaxas and Theodora Paleologos, together with President Nicole Genimahaliotis, for their contribution to the event.

Special thanks were extended to Georgia Koronis, President of the Kastorian Society of SA, and Chrysi Karagiannis, Secretary of the Kastorian Society of SA, who assisted with the kitchen and food service, as well as Evan Tsiaparis, President of the Pierikos Society, who served as Master of Ceremonies.

Vergina also acknowledged volunteers Andrew Genimahaliotis, James Metaxas, Marianthi Panagiotidis, Voula Toulantas, Evelyn Chefalakis and Sophie Loric, along with everyone who contributed their time and skills throughout the day.

This collaboration reflects Vergina’s broader contribution to South Australia’s Pan Macedonian community.

“We greatly value the relationships we have built with societies and volunteers who continue to support one another. That spirit of filoxenia, collaboration and service is what allows us to keep creating meaningful cultural experiences for our community,” Ms Genimahaliotis said.

The success of this year’s Musical Tribute will contribute to Vergina’s ongoing work and help the volunteer-run Society continue bringing cultural events to South Australia’s Greek community.

“Culture survives when we continue to participate in it. Seeing a full room, with different generations singing along to the same songs, is exactly why we continue to do this,” Ms Genimahaliotis said.
