Talented Greek Creative Evi Photopoulos Secures Residency at Waldorf Astoria

NEW YORK – The Greek artist, screenwriter, author, film producer and fine artist Evi Photopoulos has landed in New York for a special month-long exhibition and residency at the Waldorf Astoria, running from early October through to November.

The residency, which commences from October 6, brings Photopoulos’ versatile creative works to one of New York’s most famous and prestigious hotels, offering lovers of art and the creative world an opportunity to experience her artistic vision firsthand, and see her work come to life in a display of various artistic forms.

In an interview with The National Herald, the Greek creative expressed how this opportunity came about after she developed meaningful conversations with the Waldorf Astoria about a year ago, where she proposed her vision for something that would extend beyond the typical art exhibition.

She described her exhibition, ‘A Living World’, as a “living, multidisciplinary project in which painting, performance, film, music, storytelling, and direct engagement with the public could exist together.”

“That vision grew naturally from the body of work I have developed over more than two decades,” Photopoulos said to TNH.

“Throughout my practice, I have moved between different forms of expression, always exploring how they can communicate with one another and become part of a larger artistic language.”

“As our conversations developed, a strong connection emerged between my artistic vision and the Waldorf Astoria’s extraordinary cultural legacy. ‘A Living World’ grew from that dialogue – not simply as an exhibition of finished works, but as an evolving artistic experience created specifically for Waldorf Astoria New York.”

The Greek artist explained how her latest exhibition coming to New York will be on view from Tuesday, October 6, through to November 7, and will bring together more than 25 pieces, including large-scale paintings, works on paper, live performance, original film, music, as well as her own recorded voice narratives.
She also noted how throughout her residency, she will continue creating in the space.

“The performances bring together live painting and drawing with movement, sound, film, and narrative, allowing the audience to witness not only a finished artwork, but the creative process as it unfolds,” Photopoulos expressed.
“There is also a more intimate dimension to the experience. Beside selected works, visitors will be able to scan a QR code and hear my voice speaking about the ideas, memories, and experiences behind the work. I wanted to create the sense of a private encounter between the artist, the artwork, and the person standing before it.”

She added that her residency will also include ‘Roots and Wings’ – a series of intimate artist-led masterclasses followed by afternoon tea at Yoshoku.
“These encounters invite participants to move beyond observing the creative process and experience a part of it themselves,” Photopoulos said.

Designed as an interactive residency, the Greek creative said A Living World invites visitors to engage with her works through a multitude of ways, including through paintings, voice, performances, a film, music – and through real-time creation.

The month-long residency

The Greek artist explained that she would not only be embarking on a month-long residency at one of New York’s top luxury hotels but would also be the first Greek artist to host a residency there. Reflecting on what this opportunity meant to her, she shared that this milestone marked a new beginning.
“For more than two decades, my work has explored memory, nature, mythology, human experience, survival and transformation. To bring these ideas into Waldorf Astoria New York – a place with such a remarkable history and cultural presence – is deeply meaningful to me,” Photopoulos said.

“At the same time, I see it as a responsibility. I am not coming to the Waldorf simply to present something already completed. I will be creating there, performing there and engaging directly with people. The work itself will continue to evolve throughout the residency.”

Photopoulos also noted how she felt especially honored to bring her work and part of her Greek heritage to not only a great city, but a space with such a rich and remarkable history.

The anticipation ahead of the residency

Leading up to the month-long exhibition, Photopoulos said she has felt a profound sense of anticipation.
“A Living World has grown out of many years of artistic exploration, followed by an extraordinarily intense period of preparation. But however much you prepare, there comes a moment when the work has to leave you and begin its own relationship with the public – that is the moment I am most looking forward to,” she said.

“A residency is especially exciting because it remains alive. I know the structure of the project and the artistic language I am bringing into the space, but I do not want to determine every encounter in advance. I want to remain open to what the Waldorf itself, the audience, and the live creative process may reveal.”

She continued: “I feel proud, grateful and ready. Above all, I hope people will experience something that stays with them – a sense that art is not separate from life, but can hold memory, vulnerability, struggle, beauty, nature, and transformation all at once.”

Photopoulos’ residency will take place from October 6 to November 7 at Waldorf Astoria at 301 Park Avenue, New York.
